Heat pumps have a bad reputation. Not because the technology is wrong — because too many of them have been installed badly. When the design is right and the installation is done properly, they are one of the best heating systems available.
You have probably heard the stories. The heat pump that never gets the house warm. The one that costs more to run than the gas boiler it replaced. The system the householder cannot figure out how to use. Those stories are real — but they are not about heat pumps. They are about heat pumps that were designed badly, installed quickly and left without a proper commissioning.
A heat pump is not a boiler. You cannot just swap one for the other and expect the same result. The system needs designing specifically for the property — heat loss calculations room by room, radiator assessment, hot water demand, insulation levels. If someone specs a heat pump from a standard package without doing that work, the householder ends up with a system that runs constantly, costs too much and never quite gets the house comfortable.
That is where the bad reputation comes from. Not the technology — the shortcuts. When the design work is done properly and the installation is carried out by people who know what they are doing, a heat pump keeps the house warm, runs efficiently, and costs significantly less than the old heating system.
We do the design work properly because we have seen what happens when it is not done. Every property gets a detailed survey. Heat loss calculations. Radiator sizing checks. Hot water demand assessment. We work out what the building actually needs before we spec the heat pump. The right unit, sized correctly, with the distribution system set up to deliver heat where it is needed.
Then our own MCS qualified installers carry out the installation. Same team from start to finish. Once it is in, we commission it thoroughly — flow rates, temperatures, controller settings all checked and optimised. Then we sit down with the householder and walk them through how it works. The schedule, the modes, what to expect. Nobody gets left with a system they do not understand.
Heat pump sized from a brochure without a proper survey. No heat loss calculations. Existing radiators left as they are even though they are too small for the lower flow temperatures.
System fitted in a day by someone who has done a two-week course. Left on factory settings. Householder handed a manual and told to ring the manufacturer if there is a problem.
The house never gets warm enough. The bills are higher than expected. The householder tells everyone heat pumps do not work.
Detailed property survey. Room-by-room heat loss calculations. Radiator assessment — upsized where needed. Hot water demand checked. Insulation reviewed. The system is designed for the building, not guessed at.
Installed by our own MCS qualified team over the right number of days. Properly commissioned — flow rates, temperatures, controller settings all optimised. Householder walked through how it works face to face.
The house stays warm. The bills come down. The householder actually recommends it to their neighbours.
Panels on your roof generate electricity during the day. On a decent day, a well-designed system generates more than enough to run the heat pump and power the house.
Surplus electricity is stored in the battery instead of exported for pennies. When the sun goes down and the heat pump is still running, it draws from the battery instead of the grid.
The heat pump runs on the electricity your panels generated — effectively free heating. For every 1kW of electricity it uses, it produces 3-4kW of heat. That efficiency plus free electricity is where the real savings stack up.
Heat pump installations through Warm Homes, SHDF, HUG and the CHiL framework. Full PAS 2035 pathway — assessment, coordination, installation and TrustMark lodgement all handled by our team. 731 measures through CHiL and counting. We know what the auditors look for.
Multi-property heat pump programmes across your housing stock. We coordinate access with tenants, manage the programme, and hand over all compliance documentation on completion. One contract, one point of contact, same quality at scale.
Thinking about replacing your boiler? We will survey your property, tell you honestly whether a heat pump is right for it, design the system and install it. MCS certified. Government grants may be available and we can advise on eligibility. No pressure, just a proper conversation.
Properties from Scotland to Penzance that are off the gas grid and hard to reach. We look after the logistics — ferries, accommodation, materials — so the installation quality is the same wherever the property happens to be. We have been doing this since 2024.
Whether you are a homeowner thinking about making the switch, or a council running a funded programme, we will have an honest conversation about what makes sense.
